Fast and Easy DIY Energy Saving Upgrade

DIY Energy Saving Home Improvement We Approve Of!

Our motto at DDIY is “Don’t do it yourself, let us!”  but there are a few DIY projects that we do approve of our clients doing for themselves.  In this case it is stopping up the heat loss that comes from the air leaks around your outlets and light switches.

One source we found estimates that 2-5% of our home’s heat loss is due to air leaks around our switches and outlets.  Even in my relatively new home here in Lynnwood, when the wind blows I can actually feel air coming in around the cover plates.  It may not seem like much, but if cold air is getting in, it has to push warm air out.  Warm air that you paid good money to heat.

The solution?  Easily installed foam outlet and switch sealers.  For a few cents each, you can install these on your switches and outlets, cutting down significantly on how much air is getting in around them.  It made a difference in my home!

You can pick outlet and switch insulators online or at your local hardware store.  Prices vary but they aren’t expensive.  If your home has drafts coming in around the outlets, it is worth it to try and seal them up!

Have bigger concerns about the insulation and air leaks in your home?  We can help out with those projects!  Just give us a call at 425-320-3353.

75% Off Your Home Improvements? No Way in Hell!

Want 75% off your home improvements?

Plus get a free BBQ with minimum purchase?

TOUGH!  You aren’t getting it, at least not from us.

WHY?  I hear the cry go out as you read this.  The answer is that any company offering you 50% or more of a discount on their services is running a scam.  Who are the people that paid full price?  Does anyone ever?  NOPE!

The common tactic is to show buyers a massive (imaginary) front end price, then a series of discounts to get the final price down to a semi-reasonable price.  Negotiate more and the price goes down more again.  Plus the biggest discount is reserved for ‘if you buy today’ which is their hook for getting you to buy without shopping around.

The window replacement business in Washington state has in the last few years seen several lawsuits from the attorney general for shady business practices like this.  The biggest name is Penguin who has filed for bankruptcy and laid off a bunch of workers after getting slapped hard a few times by the Washington State Attorney General.

Why do they offer these fantastic deals on home improvements?

To get in your door and in your face!  They know that their sales people only need to sit down with you (and your significant other) for a couple of hours to ‘pitch’ you on how great their products are.  I don’t care if it is windows, doors, gutters, gutter covers, siding, or gold plating.  When you see and ad for home improvements offering massive discounts, they are shady!  Oh, and by the way, that 75% off is only offered at the initial visit (yeah right) and isn’t good once the salesman leaves (who are they kidding?)

Why don’t we see this sort of tactic with painting services?

My best guess is that most painting companies don’t have dedicated sales staff that is trained at roping buyers in.  Small painting companies are less ‘sophisticated’ and strictly sell on price with buyers often getting multiple bids.  Which is why you will see “$500 off your painting” to try and get buyers to call.

Besides, if painters did the same 75% discount as window and gutter guys do, their imaginary retail price for painting an average to home would have to be in the neighborhood of $11,500 and no one in their right mind would believe that.

Do you really want a cheap BBQ as a reward for paying too much for new windows, gutters or siding?

Odds are, unless you are a hardcore negotiator, you are going to pay too much for your home improvements if you call any of the ‘massive discount’ home improvement companies.  You get a free BBQ all right, but you probably paid twice what it is worth or more.

Would you like an honest price on your painting or home improvements?

DDIY Home Renewal works differently than most of the big home improvement operations.  We offer fair pricing on our painting and home improvement and maintenance services.  There are no hidden costs or massive discounts off imaginary prices if you buy today.

Wet weather is coming, are your windows water tight?

For everyone in the Seattle area, the start of the school year is the heralding of cooler wet weather to come. The question is though, is your home ready to get wet?

Failed caulking allows moisture into your home!

Fall home maintenance can be a pain, but it is absolutely essential for maintaining your home.  Wind driven rain loves to sneak in around windows which should be caulked up tight to the siding.  Unfortunately most homes have small gaps where caulking is missing or has failed.

“My home is only three years old, it is fine!” you may be thinking.  This is 100% not true!  Most newer homes we see were caulked with extremely low grade caulk that hardens and shrinks as it ages.  This means that it will not flex with the temperature changes that your home experiences and will eventually pull away from your siding and windows leaving a gap for water (and bugs) to enter.

Don’t be cheap when choosing your caulk!

A high quality elastomeric caulk will run you several dollars a tube, and yes you can find cheaper products, but you will find yourself replacing it more often which is a major piece of false economy.  One premium exterior caulking is Big Stretch®.  It is a water-based product for caulking and sealing doors, windows and siding. Big Stretch won’t crack and fall away — it just stretches — over 500%! Big Stretch accomodates the movement all houses go through as temperature, wind and seasonal changes occur.

Be sure to remove all your old loose caulking as you go around your home and keep your caulk lines as tight and clean as possible.  Remember, less is more when you are talking about caulking.  Put enough in to fill the space, not make a hill around your windows and doors.

Now this might all seem like a pain, but consider the moisture damage that water can do to a home over time and it becomes well worth it.  Water seeping into your walls can cause mold, dry rot and even insect damage as they follow the moisture into your home and set up camp in damp areas.

Caulking your home sounds like a pain???

Not feeling like climbing up a ladder to check the caulking around all your windows and doors? I understand, it can be a pain. To that end we are more than happy to come out and take care of it for you!  Our trained professionals will remove any loose caulking around your windows and doors, and reseal them with high grade elastomeric caulking. We can even paint them up and make it pretty when it is dry too!!!

What is VOC Free Paint?

What is VOC Free Green PaintVOC free paint, Low VOC paint, and natural finishes.  What’s the big deal?

Being eco friendly and ‘green’ is the in thing these days.  The do-it-yourself channels are stuffing their time slots with celebrities showing how green and environmentally friendly their homes are, and companies can’t get happily little earth friendly stickers on their products fast enough.  The problem is that a little too much hype is getting mixed into things, and that brings me to the subject of this post, paint!

What are VOC’s?
Click Here to Read About Them!

Over the last couple of years, as demand for healthier, and more eco friendly products has risen, paint manufacturers have scrambled to fill the void.   At first the Low-VOC paints were marginal at best, not very color stable and only came in flat or eggshell finishes.  Now however, there is a veritable tidal wave of ‘green’ paint pushing its way into the market in every color and sheen.  Even Home Depot has gotten on the band wagon with their FreshAire line of paint (you know it has to be good since they added the extra ‘e’ to it!)

Low VOC and VOC free paint, what’s the difference?

By legal definition any paint that has less than 5g/liter of VOC’s can be defined as VOC-Free.  Note that they aren’t actually VOC free, just that they just have a lot less than other paints which may contain 60+ grams per liter of paint.  That works out to about half a pound per gallon that will eventually boil off into the air in your home.  Low VOC paints in comparison generally come in below 50g/liter for VOC’s.

But what does it all mean?
The main concern is your indoor air quality.  The VOC’s we are talking about are things like Ethylene glycol and the very familiar formaldehyde. These are the chemicals that will work their way out of the paint, with the majority boiling off in the first few days after the paint is applied.  Sources disagree on how long paint continues to off-gas VOC’s but I would expect them to taper off and continue to emit some level of VOC’s for several years albeit in very small quantities. These chemicals are listed as causing eye and lung irritation, allergic reaction, and long term exposure (like for us in the trades) can do bad things to the Kidneys and Liver.  They just aren’t things you want to be breathing!

OK, so what if those chemicals REALLY bug you?
There are those of you out there that can not tolerate ANY VOC’s and I have to say life must be rough because VOC’s are everywhere!  There are options for wall coatings though, all using more natural ingredients such as clay, natural resins, natural oils and so on.  For those that are very sensitive these are definitely the way to go, and will only set you back slightly more than using high end VOC Free paint.  Real Milk Paint for example can be ordered online for just under $50 a gallon.

A non-technical comparison of paints.
Regular paint Man this place stinks!
Low-VOC Paint Wow, this isn’t too bad!
No/Ultra Low VOC Paint Are you really painting in here?
Organic and Truly No Voc Paint Can we eat this stuff?

So what paint do I suggest?
For the most part I feel comfortable putting low VOC paint on my clients homes if they aren’t going to be moving into them for a few days. By then the majority of the VOC’s have left the paint, and if the home is ventilated, will have dissipated.   In general though, I prefer to use a Zero VOC paint such as Miller Paint’s Acro Pure.  This reduces their (and my painting crew’s) exposure to anything nasty and lets me sleep good at night.

What is right for you?
That ultimately is your decision.  But for my clients I prefer to absorb the cost of using a little better paint to make their homes a little more healthy and possibly their lives a little bit better.  In general though, considering that the cost of the paint you use to paint your home is only a small portion of the total bill I always recommend using the best paint possible!
